A year after the release of the album Everybody’s Lost And All I Want Is To Leave, Victories At Sea comes with a deluxe edition. With the reason to ease Covid’s burden, and of course also to celebrate the album’s one-year anniversary.

The band had spent so much energy and time on the album, creating something that was a total piece of music: something they were proud of and wanted to share with their fans, but suddenly they couldn’t. Shows were rescheduled and later even canceled.

During quarantine the three men played together at a distance: two in Birmingham, one in Liverpool. While playing Daniel Johnston’s “Some Things Last A Long Time”, they got a feeling they had never experienced together before. It provided a poignant moment that was so satisfying that this became the start of the Remote Apart Sessions, in which they play album tracks and covers.

To celebrate the anniversary of Everybody’s Lost And All I Want Is To Leave, Victories At Sea is releasing the full Remote Apart Sessions, including the Johnston cover and an alternate version of album opener ‘When The Dark’, as part of a deluxe edition from the album.

The band hopes to be able to play the album live. The shows are sure to come. In the meantime, enjoy the live sessions and the rest of the Deluxe Edition.

Live videos never seen before
On February 21st, never-before-seen live videos of a very special session at The Hare And Hounds in Brighton, will be released. In October, Victories At Sea was the only band to play at this venue since it closed in March 2020. The session will include the album tracks ‘Quiet House’, ‘Late’, ‘Midnight Song’ and ‘Breathe Slowly’ plus crowd favorite ‘On Your Own’ ‘and traditional show closing’ No Escape ‘. JP finds playing live and the existence of locations very important. “Spreading this live footage is almost not about the record, but about celebrating the things you used to take for granted.”

There is a new date for Victories At Sea’s show at Cinetol in Amsterdam. Friday 16th of April it is!

The old date was 1st of October. We all know why that show could not take place . Tickets for that show are still valid for the new show. Support act will be HOOFS from Amsterdam.

It might not come as a surprise to you that there is a no-go for Victories at Sea’s Amsterdam show at Cinetol on May 1.
But we are happy to announce there is a new date for on Thursday October 1st. All tickets bought for the May show are still valid for October.

Victories at Sea released their brand new album ‘Everybody’s Lost and All I Want Is to Leave’ on Friday 21st February 2020. It’s their second studio album. Recorded on the shores of Loch Fyne and mixed in their native Birmingham, the album refines and redefines the sound of Victories at Sea.

The location of recording has had a marked influence on the album. The vast landscapes of Loch Fyne are there in the grandeur and sky scraping ambition of the already heard ‘When the Dark’, the changeability of the weather mirrored in the skittering melodies, looming builds and sudden explosion of ‘Late’; the shift from calm to cloud to downpour made melody.

The switch from what JP White, lead singer and lyricist describes as being, ‘far from the electric daylight of city evenings’, during recording to that very cityscape created a tension within the album that confronts this nature seeped creation with mechanics and artificiality.

So, the sweeping melodies and delicate piano interludes of album opener, ‘One Last Time’, are abruptly interrupted by a crescendo of closing noise that brings to mind the hectic, circular motion of rush hour traffic on Birmingham’s inner ring road. Single ‘Follow You’ delivers a seemingly straightforward and direct verse / chorus moment of ear worm brilliance only to abruptly skip and slide into a locked machine groove, the sound of Birmingham’s industrial past breaking through the sheen of modernity.

If this sounds ambitious, maybe even a little pretentious, then that is a charge that Victories at Sea are happy to rebut. ‘Everybody’s Lost and All I Want Is to Leave’ was conceived and realised as a statement. A permanent marker of the pinnacle of the trio’s possible creation, an honest and direct expression of the collective power of the three band members.

‘Everybody’s Lost and All I Want Is to Leave’ is more than a collection of songs, it stands as a collective of artistic work designed at every point to demonstrate a belief in the power of the album, the power of music, the power of words.

The new album got some nice reviews from Chaos Magazine and Dump Magazine. The release party in Birmingham (home port of the band) was a big success.

‘Quiet House’ is a statement return from the Birmingham based three piece. Initially recorded during a two week residential studio visit to the banks of Loch Fyne in Argyll, the song, along with the album, was completed with long term producer Simon Weaver at The Old Whistle Factory in their home town.  The contrast of the wide vistas of Scotland and the familiar claustrophobia of the city play out within the song, an industrial rhythm driving widescreen melodies.

The forthcoming album marks a watershed moment for Victories at Sea, familiar to many from their debut album ‘Everything Forever’ and attendant single and EP releases on renowned independent Static Caravan. Having toured with the likes of Editors and The Boxer Rebellion across the UK and Europe, the trio made a conscious decision to retreat to create music of permanence, to step off the promotional carousel and concentrate all their energies on making an album that fully encapsulated their ambition and artistic vision.

Lead singer and lyricist JP White characterises that period as one of the most productive and important in the band’s history to date:

“Ultimately, we made a record somewhere special at a very special time in terms of our own lives. I’m glad we did this, it’s made us stronger people, better friends, and that is all documented in these words, melodies, songs and happy accidents”.

The band have teamed up with Dutch label Gentlemen Recordings for the release of their second album, ‘Everybody’s Lost And All I Want Is To Leave’ on January 17^th, 2020.

Plaat op eigen voorwaarden

Na een druk bestaan met een volle touragenda met tours met Editors en The Boxer Rebellion, nam de band bewust gas terug. Het album is opgenomen in de wijde omgeving van Schotland. Ontstaan uit een drang om weg van de eigen omgeving op te nemen, met de volle focus op het maken van een plaat, zonder ergens rekening mee te moeten houden. Frontman en songwriter JP White is heel tevreden met wat deze periode gebracht heeft:

“Uiteindelijk hebben we een plaat gemaakt op een speciale plek en op speciaal tijdstip in ons leven. Ik ben blij dat we dit gedaan hebben. Het heeft ons sterkere mensen en betere vrienden gemaakt en dat is allemaal vastgelegd in de teksten, melodieën, liedjes en leuke toevalligheden.”

Donderdag 26 september ging de video bij ‘Quiet House’ al met lovende woorden in première bij het Engelstalige muziekplatform ALL THINGS LOUD.
