Today, March 10, Dutch britpop band Anemone releases their new album Freebird. Yesterday they celebrated this one with a release party at V11 in Rotterdam.

After years of criss-crossing the country with their debut album Silver Star, Anemone digs a layer deeper with the brand new record Freebird. An album full of psychedelic Britpop with a taste of shimmering folk. On which musical waves crash over each other in extended songs and pointy pop songs that tell about friendships, relationships and trust.

In the Schenk Studio in Amsterdam, Anemone takes this new path, the place where artists such as zZz, Nouveau Vélo, Lewsberg and Amber Arcades preceded the band. Now it’s time to share this new work with the rest of the world. They started sharing in Rotterdam, the home port of the band, with the release party at V11.

Anemone is back with the brand new single ‘Wheel To His Heart’. This is the first of the band’s upcoming album. The song was recorded just before the corona crisis with Jan Schenk, the producer who works with bands such as zZz, Claw Boys Claw and Nouveau Vélo. ‘Wheel To His Heart’ had been released on Friday March 5th.

Surfy Guitar Sounds

With this new slow rocker, the trio shows a sensitive and more layered side of themselves. The hard guitar riffs are exchanged for naked vocals and surfy guitar sounds. The halftime drum parts are the common thread through the track, forming the basis for a grim but hopeful song. For ‘Wheel To His Heart’ a video clip has been recorded, on the atmospheric cruise ship SS Rotterdam.

The band is known for its energetic live shows that often end in stretched psychedelic jams, as can be heard on the debut album Silver Star. Anemone previously played at festivals such as Vestrock and Motel Mozaique, participated in Popronde and were support act for bands such as Triggerfinger and Indian Askin.

Anemone is back! The band of Xander van Dijck (the boss of Cloudhead Bookings with, among others, De Likt on the roster, and ex-guitarist of The Afterveins) and Ricardo Jupijn (founder of The Daily Indie) comes with a new single after two years. In 2018 they released their debut album Silver Star, which includes the hit ‘Where’d You Go’. The album resulted in an extensive tour schedule, with 20 Popronde shows, festival performances and a support spot for Indian Askin and Hallo Venray. And now there is a new single!

Single as a direct result of the corona period

The single is much more sensitive than their previous work. With ‘Separated’ you take a journey through empty streets, deserted parking lots and abandoned cafes. The single describes the lonely and isolated feeling of today’s corona times, but it is just as much about the hope that things will get better soon.

Frontman Xander about the single: “It’s about the collective feeling of the moment. You can do little, you are allowed little and there is little prospect of anything better for the time being. But we still have hope in the right direction. Together we will have to make a difference to get out of this crisis, now there is time for reflection and to think about our future. ”

“Separated” is Anemone’s first release since their collaboration with Gentlemen Recordings. The single will be released on Friday, September 18.

Anemone from Rotterdam was formed in the summer of 2017. Rotterdam was introduced to a new sound with raw edges, psychedelic soundscapes, Manchester grooves and drawn-out brit pop songs. That summer the band dived into the studio to record Silver Star, the debut album that is released a year later. The fall of 2018 was dominated by dozens of shows during the Popronde, including the closing party in the Melkweg.

The band members are influenced by bands like The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Pavement, The Feelies, Oasis. During Anemone’s shows people whisper about The Stone Roses and Happy Mondays. Anemone plays mercilessly hard and will make you sweat during their dirty live shows. You must have seen them live before you die!
