{:en}October 5th sees the release of The Wonder Stuff’s Miles Hunt solo album ‘The Custodian’, a double CD of thirty acoustic songs, written over the last four decades. Hunt says that the idea of becoming The Custodian came from a conversation with one of his musical heroes.
“I was in New York a few years back and was invited to guest at a Tom Robinson solo show. Tom has long been an inspiration to me and given the opportunity to perform with him… well, lets just say I couldn’t polish my boots quick enough. During our brief rehearsal together on the afternoon of the show Tom asked me who I felt now owned the songs that I have written over all these years. I answered that whoever the publishing company I signed with probably did, but ultimately, I did. Tom was quick to correct me pointing out that all of my songs now belonged to my audience. Going on to explain that the songs I have written have been part of the sound track to thousands of people’s live and it is those people that now truly own them. He said that my position was now of The Custodian, the person who’s job it is to see that the songs are treated and performed with the respect the audiences deserve. It was an incredibly important thing to have said to me and something I have not and will not ever forget.”
The Wonder Stuff’ frontman Miles Hunt komt op 5 oktober met een solo-album, The Custodian geheten. Een dubbel cd met maar liefst dertig akoestische songs, geschreven over de laatste vier decennia. Volgens de maestro ontstond het idee voor The Custodian na een goed gesprek met een van zijn muzikale helden.
Miles Hunt over het ontstaan:
“Ik was in New York, een paar jaar geleden, en werd gevraagd om het voorprogramma van Tom Robinson te verzorgen. Tom is altijd een inspiratie voor mij geweest en nu kreeg ik de kans om met hem op te treden… Laat ik het zo zeggen: ik kon mijn schoenen niet snel genoeg poetsen. Tijdens onze korte repetitie samen, in de middag voor de show, vroeg Tom wie er volgens mijn gevoel eigenaar is van al die liedjes die ik in jaren heb geschreven. ‘Waarschijnlijk onze uitgever, maar uiteindelijk ikzelf’, zei ik. Tom wees mij er direct op dat alle liedjes die ik geschreven heb, nu eigendom zijn van mijn publiek, mijn fans. Hij legde uit dat de liedjes de soundtrack van duizenden levens zijn geworden en het zijn die mensen die de nummers toegeëigend hebben, ze zijn nu van hen. “
“Jij bent nu de Custodian, de bewaarder, de beheerder”, vertelde hij. “Het is je plicht ervoor te zorgen dat de songs behandeld en gespeeld worden met de respect die het publiek verdiend.” Dit was een waanzinnig belangrijk ding die mij verteld is en iets wat ik nooit zal vergeten.
